The Bibliothèque du Boisé takes home the RAIC Green Building Award

April 12, 2017

Lemay’s Bibliothèque du Boisé has just won one of Canada’s most prestigious awards: the Green Building Award, from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC).

“We are delighted to win this honour that recognizes excellence in sustainable development,” said Eric Pelletier, the project’s architectural designer and Lemay partner.

“Its success is based on remarkable teamwork by everyone involved, as well as our integration of the community’s values and sustainable development principles from the very beginning,” he said.

This is the 20th award for the Bibliothèque du Boisé, which is also certified LEED Platinum. Its many sustainable development features include the following:

- A passive heating system that redistributes heat through a geothermal loop

- An abundance of natural light for 75% of the building’s total area, for considerable energy savings

- The use of certified wood and low-emission materials, as well as recycled or regional materials

The RAIC jury was impressed by these sustainable strategies and charmed by the library’s diversity of welcoming spaces, ample natural light and views of the outdoors, as well as its use of materials that promote users’ health and well-being.

“The Bibliothèque du Boisé is a building of exceptionally high quality and exemplary design,” said a jubilant Alan DeSousa, mayor of Montreal’s Saint-Laurent borough, which houses the winning library.  “As my fellow councillors and I had hoped, it has become the flagship for our service offering, a formidable legacy for future generations.

“The designers very much deserve this award for their accomplishment.”

The Green Building Award is granted jointly by the RAIC and the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) and recognizes outstanding achievement in buildings that are environmentally responsible and promote the health and wellbeing of users. More details about this project are available here
