A new planetarium design

An international competition launched by the City of Montreal sought proposals for a new planetarium design that would include two star theatres and a surface area of 8,000 m2 while targeting LEED Platinum certification.

Lemay also considered the need for the planetarium to blend in with its adjacent, heterogeneous buildings and unify the overall space, as well as create a place of wonder, discovery, stimulation and education.

Lemay's solution was to create an object with apparent simplicity. Strong, but intangible; present but also absent. Like the infinity of space, the object attracts the visitor, who must change perspective to understand its mechanism.
